The defending champions of the Vodacom Premier League (VPL) Simba SC put on a five-star performance at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam, thrashing relegation candidates Mtibwa Sugar 5-0 to go within three points of leaders and perennial rivals Young Africans (Yanga).
Simba SC shifted their focus back to the domestic league on Wednesday afternoon after a rather successful CAF Champions League group stage action where they thrashed AS Vita Club of Congo 4-1 at home and went on to lose 1-0 to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Cairo, Egypt.
The hosts started the game ferociously, throwing attack after attack on their helpless visitors from Turiani, and were rewarded with a goal in the 9th minute, Zambian Maestro Clatous Chota Chama slotting in.
Ten minutes later, another Zambian, Larry Bwalya joined his compatriot on the scoreboard before Rwandese striker Meddie Kagere capped off a dominant first-half performance with a goal of his own in the 42nd minute.
The second stanza began in the same manner as the first, the speed and fluent movement from the “Wekundu wa Msimbazi” were too much for the sugar millers. Meddie Kagere grabbed his brace in the 51st minute before in-form Mozambique star Louis Jose Miquissone joined the scoring party in the 69th minute.
Simba SC came into this match looking to take advantage of the slips-ups their rivals Azam and Yanga were having while at the same time, looking to remind entire Tanzania that they are the team to beat. A draw with Tanzania Police on 10th March also fuelled Simba’s desire to get back to winning ways. After the huge win, they are now second with 49 points and four games in hand.
Simba’s form has seen them rack up 51 goals in the league- the best record in the league so far. They have also had the meanest defense; conceding only 9 goals while their opponents Mtibwa Sugar has now conceded 23 goals.
On the other hand, the loss means that Mtibwa Sugar have failed to win each of their last five games and are only 8 points above Mwadui who sit last on the Vodacom Premier League (VPL) table.
Tomorrow will see other matches with Ihefu FC hosting Mbeya City while Polisi Morogoro will also host Namungo FC. Both matches kick-off at 4 pm.
